Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation: WTF?!11.12.08

I’ve shared to you on my previous post what sexual identity and what gender identity are. Now, let me share to you another set of terms that can help you further in studying human sexuality.

John Money and Anke Ehrhardt described gender role behavior as all those things that a person says or does to disclose himself or herself as having the status of boy or man, girl or woman, respectively. A gender role is not established at birth but is built up cumulatively through (1) experiences encountered and transacted through casual and unplanned learning, (2) explicit instruction and inculcation, and (3) spontaneously putting two and two together to make sometimes four and sometimes five. The usual outcome is a congruence of gender identity and gender role. Although biological attributes are significant, the major factor in achieving the role appropriate to a person’s sex is learning.

Research on sex differences in children’s behavior reveals more psychological similarities than differences. Girls, however, are found to be less susceptible to tantrums after the age of 18 months than are boys, and boys generally are more physically and verbally aggressive than are girls from age 2 onward. Little girls and little boys are similarly active, but boys are more easily stimulated to sudden bursts of activity when they are in groups. Some researchers speculate that, although aggression is a learned behavior, male hormones may have sensitized boys’ neural organizations to absorb these lessons more easily than do girls.

Persons’ gender roles can seem to be opposed to their gender identities. Persons may identify with their own sex and yet adopt the dress, hairstyle, or other characteristics of the opposite sex. Or, they may identify with the opposite sex and yet for expediency adopt many behavioral characteristics of their own sex.

Sexual orientation describes the object of a person’s sexual impulses: heterosexual (opposite sex), homosexual (same sex), or bisexual (both sexes). A group of people have defined themselves as “asexual” and assert this as a positive identity. Some researchers believe this lack of attraction to any object is a manifestation of a desire disorder.

On my next post, I will share to you how to play with these terms in describing one’s personality. I’m excited about this. Watch out for it! See yah!

Sexual Identity and Gender Identity: What’s the Difference?11.09.08

While I was reading the newet edition of the Synopsis of Psychiatry by Kaplan and Saddock (10th ed), I bumped into something that I really want to share with my peers. Read on..

Sexuality depends on four interrelated psychosexual factors: sexual identity, gender identity, sexual orientation, and sexual behavior. These factors affect personality, growth, development, and functioning. Sexuality is something more than physical sex, coital or noncoital, and something less than all behaviors directed toward attaining pleasure.

Sexual identity is the pattern of a person’s biological sexual characteristics: chromosomes, external genitalia, internal genitalia, hormonal composition, gonads, and secondary sex characteristics. In normal development, these characteristics form a cohesive pattern that leaves a person in no doubt about his or her sex. Gender identity is a person’s sense of maleness or femaleness. Sexual identity and gender identity are interactive. Genetic influences and hormones affect behavior and the environment affects hormonal production and gene expression.

By 2 to 3 years of age, almost everyone has a firm conviction that “I am male” or “I am female.” Yet, even if maleness and femaleness develop normally, persons must still develop a sense of masculinity or femininity.

Gender identity, according to Robert Stoller, “connotes psychological aspects of behavior related to masculinity and femininity.” He considers gender social and sex biological: “Most often the two are relatively congruent, that is, males tend to be manly and females womanly.” But sex and gender can develop in conflicting or even opposite ways.

On my next post. i will be dfferentiating Gender Role and Sexual Orientation.

Helping Suicidal People08.15.08

I myself have thought of killing myself although I never have attempted it. I think that God has been with me all throughout and he has never left me that is why I believe I still remain intact. Nowadays, the evil thoughts of destroying myself has given up on haunting me. Thank you so much!

On our masters, we have deeply discussed DEPRESSION which is the root cause of Suicide and suicidal ideation. Well, most of us knows that a LOSS will definitely trigger all of these. Now, I have sought some tips on how to manage suicidal patients:

• Always take suicidal comments very seriously. When a person says that he or she is thinking about suicide, you must always take the comments seriously. Assuming that the person is only seeking attention is a very serious, and potentially disastrous, error. Get help immediately.
• Follow the information that is on the home page of Suicide.org. Feel free to view the home page of this site and to use it to help you. Dealing with a person who is suicidal is not easy, so following what is on the home page of Suicide.org can help you. And always remember that you need to call 911 or your local emergency number immediately for anyone who is at a high risk for suicide. Do not hesitate.
• Try not to act shocked. The person is already highly distressed, and if you are shocked by what is said, the person will become more distressed. Stay calm, and talk with him or her in a matter-of-fact manner, but get help immediately. If the person is at a high risk for suicide, call 911 immediately.
• Get help immediately. Call 911, 1-800-SUICIDE, or 1-800-273-TALK. This point cannot be overemphasized; a person who is suicidal needs immediate professional help.
• Do not handle the situation by yourself. A suicidal person needs immediate assistance from qualified mental health professionals. Again, call 911, 1-800-SUICIDE, or 1-800-273-TALK. And do not allow untrained individuals to act as the only couselors to the individual.

My tastebuds miss Durian!07.30.08

Huhuhu!

Since I came here in Baguio, I was unable to eat any product with my favorite fruit - durian. Well, the King of all fruits is a product of my hometown Tagum City where we also celebrate the crazy durian festival where you can eat a range of durian products that includes durian cakes, shake, juice, jam, tarts, buns, many desserts, and even pizza! Yum yum yum. Well, most of the people in Baguio and in Luzon does not like durian basically because of its fowl smell and unique taste but to us Dabawenyos (people of Davao), it is something we would celebrate for.

The durian fruit is often called the world’s most dangerous fruit. It is round or egg shaped and usually weighs 2.8 to 3.5 kg (6 to 8 lb). Its thick rind is green or yellowish and covered with hard, sharp spines. The fruit must be handled by its stalk to avoid injury from the spines. A human or animal hit by a falling durian can be seriously injured or even killed. Inside the fruit are one to four large seeds, each up to 3.5 cm (1.3 in) long, that are edible when roasted, fried, or boiled. The rest of the fruit consists of a custardlike pulp that is foul smelling but very tasty. The pulp is usually eaten fresh but is also added to cakes, ice cream, and other foods. Elephants, tigers, rhinoceroses, and other wild animals are attracted by the odor of ripe durians and compete for fallen fruit.

Scientific classification: The durian tree belongs to the bombax family, Bombacaceae. It is classified as Durio zibethinus.

EBSCO - The SLU Online Library07.20.08

Everybody in our nursing research class is required to have a research output before the end of the semester. At this very early stage, almost everyone is wanting to have every part done smoothly but the problem is that we need a lot of sources. The internet is a big source of information and we can definitely get so much from it but the problem is that in doing a publishable research output, every source must be reliable and it is sad to say that a lot of articles you get from the internet are not reliable.

Our teacher said that there is a solution to our problems in getting related literature and that is the EBSCO. She then scheduled us an orientation about EBSCO last saturday and I was totally amazed on how this kind of system works. EBSCO is an online library where books and its contents, articles, magazine and newspaper articles, and a lot more is stored in its database. In order to acess EBSCO you have to pay for it but Saint Louis University has bought it for the students so all of the Louisians can access EBSCO inside and even outside the school internet premises with a secret password exclusively given to us.

SLU houses 3 big floor of books for a library and with the addition of EBSCO, it is now one of the most amazing libraries in the Philippines!

The St. Jude Thaddeus Novena07.10.08

Yes, I am a spiritual person…. yea yeah. Well, I am a devotee of St Jude Thaddeaus and I have been asking lots from God thru his catalytic power. Here is his Novena that I would like to share to everyone who wishes to increase their chance of getting what they want….

NOVENA TO ST. JUDE
Must be said 6 times daily for 9 consecutive days, leaving 9 copies in the church each day. Prayer will be answered on or before the 9th day. Has never known to fail
NOVENA
May the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus be adored, loved in all tabernacles until the end of time
May the most Sacred Heart of Jesus be praised and glorified now and forever
ST. JUDE PRAY FOR US AND HEAR OUR PRAYERS
Blessed be the Sacred Heart of Jesus
Blessed be the Immaculate Heart of Mary
Blessed be St. Jude Thaddeus
In all the world and for all eternity
[Our Father, Hail Mary]
PRAYER
O glorious apostle, St. Jude Thaddeus, true relative of Jesus and Mary, I salute you through the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. Through this Heart, I praise and thank God for all the graces He has bestowed upon you. Humbly prostrate before you, I implore you through the heart to look down upon me with compassion. Oh, despise not my poor prayer, let not my trust be confounded. To you God has granted the privilege of aiding mankind in the most desperate cases. Oh, come to my aid that I may praise the mercies of God. All my life, I will be grateful to you, and will be your faithful client until I can thank you in Heaven. Amen

I Miss Harry Potter07.10.08

Excitement was shifting from neuron to neuron. I slowly opened the parcel containing my 14th birthday gift. I wondered why dad would give me two thick paperback novels that seemed to be appropriate for children of half my age. I brought it to class. No one seemed interested. A week after, some weird-looking muggles approached me and said that the book was a hit in Great Britain. Duh, stupid muggles! Well, that convinced me, atleast, to open the book and read from line toline, then page to page. That’s when I started to fly a broom and play quidditch, wave a wand and enunciate spells, and put on a hat that screamed… SLYTHERIN!
Harry Potter was a common talk in the entire school. Some muggles preferred to watch the HP movies while some fancied the book, which is more detailed and unmodified. The only question I had was “What will the ending of this fascinating story be like?”

Seven years passed and that question has already been answered when my journey with HP took its last curtsy with the 7th installment of JK’s book – The Deathly Hallows. Yes, ‘the boy who lived’ failed to succumb to You-know-who’s evil powers. Truly, there are certain things that even the greatest sorcerer couldn’t explain, one of which is LOVE!

It was a massacre of characters yet I’m still thankful that no one of the three main characters met death along the story. Fear not, some can still be reached thru portraits. I must also praise Snape’s bravery. He was a hero all along and I am very sorry to witness his gruesome death in the hands, or should I say scutes, of Nagini.
The epilogue was lovely and peace streamed down my soul when I read the last words – “All was well”.

I want Hillary.. not Obama06.15.08

Everybody’s excited about the incoming American Elections and oh well, I want to make a stand and that is I really want Hillary Clinton (not Hillary DUff) to win! The sad thing is that will no longer be possible because Obama has already taken over the democratic party. So sad! Well, here’s something I found about her. I respect each and everyone’s choice. Afterall, it’s your choice and vote that matters and not everybody else’s. Hello Hillary!!!

Hillary was raised in a middle-class family in the middle of America. From that classic suburban childhood in Park Ridge, Illinois, Hillary went on to become one of America’s foremost advocates for children and families; an attorney twice voted one of the most influential in America; a First Lady of Arkansas who helped transform the schools; a bestselling author; a First Lady for America who helped transform that role, becoming a champion for health care and families at home and a champion of women’s rights and human rights around the world.

AS A FIRST LADY

When her husband was elected President in 1992, Hillary’s work as a champion for women was recognized and admired around the world. She traveled the globe speaking out against the degradation and abuse of women and standing up for the powerful idea that women’s rights are human rights.

In the White House, Hillary led efforts to make adoption easier, to expand early learning and child care, to increase funding for breast cancer research, and to help veterans suffering from Gulf War syndrome who had too often been ignored in the past. She helped launch a national campaign to prevent teen pregnancy and helped create the Adoption and Safe Families Act of 1997, which moved children from foster care to adoption more quickly. Thanks in part to her efforts, the number of children who have moved out of foster care into adoption has increased dramatically. (more…)
